Native Instruments have added a new update to MASCHINE that is free to any existing owners of their MASCHINE 2 software. and if you are a live user, that will work fine with it.MASCHINE 2.6 comes with more tools to spark your creativity, make you more productive in the studio, and add flair to your live sessions. but do keep in mind you can turn those into dedicated synth and run legacy versions and os 10.6. Which is why they are pretty much giving those away. and keep in mind that most phones and pads now sold have more processing power than a macbook from 2010 or earlier. NI has really put the minimum cut off at the 2010 i5 macbook pros. so keep that in mind with ni going 64b bit only and core2 duo is no longer really supported, and the macbook is core2 duo only for the 2010 model. There is no absoletely benefit to running 64bit on a computer with 4G or less ram, in fact you will get less performance as the ram requirements will increase slightly. and you should run os 10.7/8 on that and apps in 32bit.

Basically your performance on even a 2010 macbook pro i7 will be less than a 2013 i5 mbp, which u can get new for 1k.the quad core 3g ram phone I an using right now is probably gives more performance than those. It is more likely the core2 duo processor and hard drive, if 5400rpm, will give you issues than the ram if you only have maschine open as that us an earlier version of the processors, even if you get a 2010 mbp i7 dual, quad did not come out til 2011, one, the threading and power usage is limited in the earlier ones compared to the newest gen, so if you like running multi instances of Reaktor, forget about it. The system needs 1G + 1G headroom for background processes. 9 to 1.5 g of ram with running many instances of knotakt. u can get away with 4G of ram provided you do not have other apps open. The 2010 should be fine if you do not plan on updating anything.

with software solutions, the computer is YOUR HARDWARE. Save the bucks up a bit longer and go for a 2011 quad i7. My first thought would be that in terms of todays computers, that would be something, like a chrome book, you would give a 2 year old to play with and learn about computers as it is low risk and the plastic case durable.
